CBD for COVID-19: Insights Revealed by Recent Studies

CBD for CovidCBD for COVID-19: Insights Revealed from Recent Studies | fabuleaf

The COVID-19 pandemic has had huge ramifications in the United States, and there’s so much that we’re still trying to learn.

These changes have people scrambling for answers and even a glimmer of hope in how we can live with and move past this virus. Right now, some groundbreaking research in the world of cannabidiol (CBD) might provide that glimmer of hope.

People are using CBD today for all sorts of issues, to the point that it’s a $4.6 billion business.

So can patients use CBD for COVID-19? Below we’ll dive into some studies that show that this might be the case.

Studies Show That CBD Might Fight Lung Inflammation

“It’s just the flu.”

This statement was a common sentiment around February or March when headlines about the coronavirus were beginning to pick up. It was reported as a type of flu that was spreading like wildfire, but many had no idea of how severe the effects could be.

By the time cases in the United States began multiplying and closures happened, information on the true nature of the virus began picking up. Now it’s clear that COVID-19 comes with several symptoms, and the damaging effects to the respiratory system are chief among them.

After you contract the coronavirus it begins doing damage to your lungs and respiratory system. Your lungs become inflamed to the point that it’s difficult and even painful to breathe.

This is where CBD might potentially come into play.

New studies indicate that CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can work to heal inflammation in the lungs. This way, the cough and respiratory damage that patients experience will begin to subside. The anti-viral properties of CBD may also help to soothe symptoms.

If the studies are true, easing these symptoms through the use of CBD can make a person’s recovery process easier. You can shop for several full-spectrum CBD products that could help you with so many different ailments.

Initial Testing and Observations Show Some Potential Promise

So what exactly do the studies say about CBD’s potential effectiveness against COVID-19?

Scientists in this study game rats a dose of a drug that causes them to experience acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) symptoms. With this condition, your body overproduces a protein called cytokine.

This creates a “storm” effect, which causes your lungs to become inflamed. The inflammation is intended to fight infections, but your body’s overreaction creates undesirable side effects.

Recent studies reveal the cannabinoids, including CBD, may contain properties that inhibit cytokine and could reduce cytokine storm. Rats that were given CBD experienced a reduction in cytokine and progress in moving toward homeostasis.

These results are potentially groundbreaking. Excessive cytokine production causes so many of the COVID-19 symptoms people suffer from. Cytokine can cause high fevers, bodily swelling, headache, nausea, and organ failure.

Experts have said that COVID-19 may create long-term or permanent damage to the lungs, so anything that can help deter these effects could be a real game-changer.

Anti-Stress and Anxiolytic Properties of CBD May Indirectly Help with COVID-19

Whether you are recovering from COVID-19, trying to avoid it, or are currently infected with it, stress and anxiety are almost inevitable.

Within the brain, there are two chemicals that play a major role in the level of stress and anxiety experienced by the body–cortisol and serotonin.

CBD and Cortisol

Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone. It works with the brain to moderate mood, motivation, fear, and the infamous “fight or flight” instinct.

When the body is in a state of stress, cortisol is released. This function is designed to help fuel the body to take action and avoid danger. As such, cortisol and stress are both vital components of the body; however, when experienced too often or too much, it can be harmful.

In a clinical study involving 11 volunteers, researchers found that CBD was able to interfere with the secretion of cortisol, thereby mitigating the rise of stress levels in the body.

CBD and Seratonin

Serotonin is a chemical that is often referred to as the “happy chemical” due to its involvement in the regulation of mood and social behavior.

Researchers have found that CBD has exhibited the ability to modulate serotonin levels in the brain.

Due to this unique ability, researchers believe that CBD may possess anxiolytic properties and could be a potential treatment for a variety of stress and anxiety-related disorders.

CBD is a Relatively Low-Risk Option to Evaluate

So what makes these findings so potentially helpful? For one, anything that can make COVID-19 easier to live with will be helpful to the hundreds of thousands diagnosed.

While more research is needed to accurately evaluate the efficacy of CBD on an individual-use basis, the World Health Organization (WHO) has claimed that “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile.”

In addition, unlike other cannabis compounds like Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychotropic and will not induce intoxicating effects on the user. In other words, CBD will not get you high.

With a relatively good safety profile confirmed by WHO, any help CBD could provide amidst the worldwide pandemic could be greatly beneficial.

The Results Might Work Better Alongside Cannabis Terpenes

When CBD is used in conjunction with terpenes and other cannabinoids, the multiple compounds work together to deliver a stronger effect than anyone compound could on its own. This phenomenon is known as the entourage effect.

While some researchers are studying CBD as a potential way to help with COVID-19, others are evaluating the efficacy of other cannabis compounds, such as terpenes, against the virus.

A recent report from Health Europa announced that a team of Israeli researchers is currently “examining the efficacy of the unique cannabis terpene formulation – NT-VRL – in treating a diverse range of inflammatory conditions, including the life-threatening cytokine storm syndrome caused by COVID-19.”

According to the researchers, preliminary results revealed from the study were highly positive.

While further research is needed to properly evaluate the use of NT-VRL against COVID-19, future insights could reveal the potential effectiveness of a CBD and NT-VRL blend to help with the virus.
